The brief
A couple working from home in a two-up two-down, with a small rear roof and a garden reached only through the house. They wanted lower bills and a battery for the evenings, without scaffold through the hallway.
How we did it
Over the wall
Scaffold and panels came over the back wall from the lane, by arrangement with the neighbours.
Every slate counted
Eight panels fit the small slope exactly, clear of the chimney’s shadow in winter.
Battery under the stairs
A slim 5 kWh battery in the cupboard under the stairs, with a fire-rated lining.
Evenings on sunshine
Charging set so the battery is full by five on most days from March to October.
Terraces are some of the best homes for solar: steep roofs, often facing south or west, and people at home more than they used to be. They can also be the hardest to reach.
Quarry Row backs onto a lane, so we brought everything over the back wall with the neighbours’ blessing and had the panels on and the battery in by four. The owners now run their working day and most evenings from the roof.
